NEEM POWDER PROVES TO BE AN EFFECTIVE INSECTICIDE: The Agriculture and Public Parks section at Dubai Municipality has made a pioneering scientific achievement in combating plant diseases using blight-resistant species of plants. The municipality has found out that neem trees which are abundant in the UAE are rich sources of natural insecticide for plants. The discovery was the result of a study conducted by Bashir Jafar Suraj, an engineer at the municipality. The study was based on several researches conducted during the past three decades in several parts of the world. The researches were prompted by the destructive effects of chemical insecticides on man, environment and animals. The focus on neem trees as a source of natural insecticides was further supported by several factors. Neem trees have a very long life span and need very little effort to cultivate. The natural insecticide lies in concentrated form in the fruits of the tree and easy to extract. Over 40kg of fruits can be collected from a single tree every season. The insecticide can be extracted and processed using cost effective and simple methods. Besides, the insecticide extracted from neem trees is harmless to humans as well as the environment. The insecticide has a very low toxic content and prevents the nutrition process of disease-causing organisms in plants. The effectiveness of using neem powder in combating plant diseases has been proved to be very high. - The Emirates News DUBAI ON COURSE TO GREEN TARGET: About 5.5 % of Dubai is covered by greenery, and the figure is likely to go up to eight per cent by the turn of the century, according to Mohammad Obaid Al Mulla, Head of the Dubai Municipality’s Horticulture and Public Parks Department. For the past couple of years the municipality has shown great interest in increasing the greenery in Dubai. “By the year 2000 we will try to reach the recommended target of eight per cent greenery according to international standards,” he told Gulf News yesterday. The municipality is confident of achieving their target, provided the public cooperates with them. Besides irrigation, the problems are confounded by people walking over green patches. “When they do they step on the sprinklers causing them to change direction, and instead of spraying the grass they spray the street,” Al Mulla said. Other problems include the increase in temperature during the summer, and vegetation diseases, which are promptly dealt with by the municipality, he said. “We are now greening residential areas and we are urging residents to cooperate with the municipality in taking care of the trees,” he said. Telling children not to break twigs and giving water to the trees could greatly help the municipality. “Children must understand that the trees help keep the climate cool and healthy, and that it is costly to replant,” he said. “We have stopped using chemical pesticides, and instead we now use natural pesticides like the seeds of Al Neem tree (Azadirachta Indica).” - The Gulf News My Own Discovery of Neem: In Sept. 1997 I developed itchy blisters on my hands. I was told by a friend who is a Nurse Aid that I had scabies. Now I think I never did. At the time, I used a scabies lotion to get rid of what he also thought was scabies. The blisters and itch remained. Two months after the blisters and itch first started I ended up in hospital with blisters all over my leg as and hands. I was given creams and sent home. This did nothing to ease the problem and two weeks later I ended up as a patient at the same hospital with pus seeping from the blisters on my legs. I remained there for a week. The doctors never discovered what caused my condition. Over the coming months I was prescribed various creams and oral steroids, none cleared the problem. i was having emulsifying baths and using only silkcocks base on my skin. I continued to attend the hospital for almost two years. Eventually the major blisters on my legs healed but my hands remained sore and dry. Every now and then I would get a terrible itch, especially in the mornings. Little nettle like blisters would erupt on my hands and when they wept and dried out the skin was left sore and cracked. Sometimes this was worse than others. Some of it was stress related. In January 2001 I took my brothers advice and began using Neem cream. Within three weeks of starting using the cream my hands were almost healed, within six weeks my hands were perfect. No itching, no blisters. Thanks for Neem. - Kathy Mc Mohan Psoriasis: Sore Hands healed For approximately one and a half years I struggled to work. My hands were so sore they would bleed just getting change out of my pocket. I found it difficult to have showers, to work, even to shake hands with someone as abrasions had developed all over both of my hands. The skin on my hands had dried up and they were cracked and cut, extremely sore and painful. I used to work as a car and bike mechanic but had to give this up as even when I wore gloves they would still get worse nothing seemed to work. We could not pin point exactly what was causing the condition. I came to the conclusion that it was a number of things, like oil, washing up liquid, various creams and even water. We tried a lot of different creams from doctors and herbalists however they only lasted a short time and then my hands seemed to develop an immunity against them and return to their original state. Finally we found neem, after the first week I noticed a difference, it was not an immediate cure. Soon it proved to produce the best results. Now with between 4-7 applications a week I’m back to fixing cars. As long as I keep my hands covered when I’m working I have no problems. Even now when I’m not working my hands feel normal again, I don’t have to worry about bending my fingers too far which used to cause them to bleed and unless I am working with products that irritate my skin I don’t have to wear gloves at all. Neem is definitely the best solution I have found and I’m sure that if I continue to use it I will be able to lead a perfectly normal life, and its all thanks to Neem. - Bruce K. Ireland Head Lice & Chickenpox success Maeve attends playschool and earlier this year she was infested with head lice. I added neem oil to her ordinary shampoo and washed her hair. Once it was dry I added Neem to Sweet Almond oil and rubbed this into her scalp. We left this in overnight and did this for three days and also used a finetooth comb. After three days there were no lice left and no more eggs had hatched. All Maeves bedclothes were washed and the application was repeated ten days later. Maeve was completely clear of lice after three days and her hair is lovely and healthy. Maeve also got Chickenpox recently. She was very irritable and sickly with this. I began to use one of Kathy’s blends for children on the blisters and by Monday some of the blisters were already drying up. Maeve is much better and is not irritable with an itch in the night from the blisters anymore. The cream is cooling and soothing. - Helena Scalp Psoriasis much improved I suffer from psoriasis on my scalp. I have had this condition since I was very young. I have used all kinds of topical creams and shampoos which worked in the short-term but as soon as I would stop using them the condition would return. I began using neem well in the past few months and I find the condition has reduced in severity. My hair is in great condition also. I find that stress reduction helps also. - Geraldine
